Anna Avis (Hatfield) Hartvigsen (1919 - 2017)
Anna Avis Hatfield was born on November 14, 1919 in Newburg Township, Iowa to James Dudley Herboth Hatfield and Minnie Susan Minick. She was the next youngest of seven children (Mary, Iris, Merle, Pansy, Joe, Avis and Lee). All of her siblings predeceased Avis.
Named after Avis O'Brien who helped deliver her, and known as Avis Anne, it was only in later life she learned her given name was Anna Avis. Her mother passed away when Avis was nine years old. Her father remarried in 1929 and had five more children (Mavis, Fred, Dorothy Jean, James and Phyllis Anne).
Avis was very bright. She taught herself to read while recovering from a badly burned leg at age three. She started grade school at age five but was quickly advanced to third grade before her sixth birthday. She graduated from 8th grade by age 11. Avis moved to live in her Grandmother's house in Livonia Iowa where she graduated from high school at age 13. She later moved to live with her sister Pansy and Pansy's husband Ernie in Story City, Iowa. From there Avis moved to Ames, Iowa where she shared an apartment with three other women (Juanita, Ester and Pauline). She first worked as a waitress at Amero 1st, then as a clerk at a drug store and finally as a postal clerk.
Avis met Donald Edgar Hartvigsen while working in the postal substation serving college students in Ames, Iowa where Donald was attending graduate school and held a teaching scholarship at Iowa State. They developed a friendship and dated until Avis moved to Kansas City. While in Kansas City, Avis met Donald's cousin Hugh who was in dental school. Donald visited Hugh and renewed his friendship with Avis. Pearl Harbor thrust the U.S. into WWII and Donald was offered a job working for the Navy in New Jersey. He returned to Kansas City and asked Avis to marry him. They got engaged and were married in Nutley, NJ by Bishop Wyndell Hyde on June 27, 1942. This was the Bishop's first wedding ceremony as a newly ordained Bishop. Avis's best friend Lucille Yubben and Donald's friend Willard Dirksen served as Maid of Honor and Best Man. On February 3, 1950 their marriage was sealed for time and eternity in the St. George Utah temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Their children were sealed to them on that date as well.
Avis and Donald lived in Bayonne, NJ from July 1942 until January 1946 when they relocated to China Lake, CA for Donald's employment with the government at the Naval Ordinance Test Station. They remained in China Lake until May 1955 when they moved to Glendora, CA where Donald worked for Aerojet General until 1972 when Donald returned to Civil Service for the U.S. Navy. Avis and Donald moved 27 times during their marriage. In addition to the foregoing cities, they lived in Sacramento CA, Claremont, CA, LaVerne, CA, Arlington, VA, Upland, CA, Chico, CA, Alta Loma, CA, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, St. George, UT, San Francisco, CA and back to St. George.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Donald Edgar Hartvigsen, her son-in-law, Phillip Morreale, son-in-law, John Milner, and her daughter-in-law, Vicki Dawn Poet Hartvigsen. Following Donald's passing, Avis moved in with her daughter Nancy Milner in Tucson, AZ. Nancy remained her mother's primary care giver until Avis's passing. Avis is survived by her four children (Linda Diane Mjellem, Nancy Lynn Milner, Mary Susan Wellmon and Gary Reed Hartvigsen), their children's spouses (Eilert Norman Mjellem, John Wellmon and Debbie Hartvigsen), her 11 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Avis was a wonderful role model for her children and their descendants. She was generous to a fault, had great integrity and was a loving mother. Like a mother bear, nothing could stand between Avis and her children. While Avis was a stay-at-home-Mother, her interests were far and wide. She was a voracious reader, she researched the genealogy of her family over many years including a trips to the Library of Congress while living In Arlington, VA. She attended Jr. College where she majored in English and she became a Life Master in Bridge. She had encyclopedic knowledge of myriad subjects. She could have been a competitor of Ken Jennings on Jeopardy and would have been a winning contender on Wheel of Fortune.
The family would like to thank Peppi's House for her wonderful care during hospice and Infinity Assisted Living for her care during the preceding two and half years. Private Graveside services will be held on October 28, 2017 at Tonaquint Cemetery in St. George, UT where Avis will be laid to rest by her husband Donald, our loving father.
