Alton Ray Barringer, son of the late Sam and Mettie Honeycutt Barringer, was born May 4, 1935, and died Saturday, January 25th, 2020 at his home. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 29th from 12:00 until 1:30PM at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care in Albemarle. A graveside service with full military rights conducted by the US Navy Honor Guard will follow at 2:00PM at Stanly Gardens of Memory.

He was married for 52 years to the late Mary Vernell Starnes Barringer. He is survived by two sons; Greg Barringer (Barbara) of Cabarrus County and Chip Barringer (Cindy) of Midland, NC, two granddaughters; Britni Clodfelter (Travis), and Bailey Rutherford (Samuel), and two great-granddaughters, Emma Rae Clodfelter, and Mia Rose Clodfelter. His brother Gleason Barringer, and sisters Elsie Morris, Cora Lee Tucker, and Ora Mae Hatley formerly of Albemarle preceded him death.

Mr. Barringer entered the US Navy at the age of 17 and retired Chief Petty Officer in 1973, after 21 years' service. He served on the Cuban Blockade, four tours in Vietnam, and on five ships, USS Frontier AD-25, USS Capricornus AKA-57, USS Okinawa LPH-3, USS Enterprise CVAN-65, and USS Bordelon DD-881. After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Barringer worked as Quality Control Manager for Champion International in Charleston, SC, and Sales Manager for Decolam Inc. in Orangeburg, SC, then later for Georgia Pacific. He then became General Manager for Eudy's Cabinet in Stanfield, NC, and General Manager for Patrick Industries in Charlotte, NC and New London, NC.

Mr. Barringer was born and raised in Albemarle, and returned to live there, along with his family, in 1993 and remained there until his death. He loved to fish, loved his family and loved Jesus Christ.

Ray was very proud to be a veteran of the United States Navy and to have served the United States of America. His family is extremely proud of his service but mostly proud to call him "Dad" and "Pop". He was one of a kind and he always took care of his family. We are sad to let him go but we take joy in knowing that he has gone to be with his precious Vernie.
