In 1870 Ed, Jacob and Fanny lived with their mother and stepfather, Ambrose Johnson, in Walla Walla, Washington territory.
In 1880 Ed lived in Island City, OR with his cousin, Bell, and her husband, James McAllister. From there he apparently made his way to Montana where for years he ranched. He became one of the better known wagon bosses and a horse racer. He won one held in Miles City in Nov 1885, riding a roan. (The Yellowstone Journal, 28 Nov 1885, pg. 3)
He was admitted to the asylum from Stacey, MT in late January 1912 and was in care here 13 yr 4 days. He succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis and chronic myocarditis. He had not married.
