Louisville, Ky., June 8 – Automobile accidents in different parts of the city at about the same time cost the lives of John L. Helm, Sr., one of Louisville's most prominent citizens, and Mrs. John Bruce, member of a leading family of Eminence, Ky.
Mr. Helm, who died at the Norton infirmary shortly after the accident, was stuck by an automobile truck which crossing the street at fifth and Main. The truck was driven by Walter Applegate, of Central, ind., who was arrested and charged with murder.
Mr. Helm was a son of John L. Helm, once governor of the State of Kentucky, and a brother of Ben Hardin Helm, commander oof the Orphan Brigade, who was killed in action at the battle of Chickamauga during the Civil War. He was the uncle of T. Kennedy Helm and Helm Bruce, both prominent Louisville attorneys.
Mrs. Bruce, who was 70 years old, was struck by a car driven by Miss Edith Callahan, 19 years old, daughter of Colonel P. H. Callahan. The car knocked her to the street and passed over her neck, breaking it, and she died as she was being taken to the hospital.
Following the accident Miss Callahan drove to the police station with her mother and surrendered. A charge of involuntary manslaughter was entered against her and she was released on $1,000 bail, furnished by her father.
