Mary Polly "Polly" Shinn Wilson was the eighth of ten children born to Amasa Shinn and Lydia Shinn Shinn. Her given name was Mary Polly but was called Polly. Her parents were both from Virginia as were all of her siblings with the exception of one who was born in Illinois. Her siblings included:

Her father died in the state of Illinois.
