Irene Marcella Boston, 93 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at the Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. Irene was born on January 17, 1927, in Phillips County, Kansas, the youngest of three children to George B. and Daisy Alice (Christoffersen) Madison. As a young girl, she and her family lived in Naponee, Nebraska, where she received her education and later graduated from Naponee High School with the class of 1945.

Following her education, Irene moved to Alma and started working at Cudahay’s Packing Plant and later worked at Stuhmer’s Ben Franklin Store, until 1952. That year, she decided to pursue education from Hastings Beauty Academy and became a licensed beautician. Irene went to work for Carolmae’s Beauty Shop in Kearney, Nebraska, until she met and later married Cecil Boston. Irene and Cecil, and Cecil’s young daughter, Cindy, made their home in Alma until 1962, when Cecil was transferred to Holdrege for his job. Irene and Cecil were blessed with two sons: Craig and Clark.

Irene was a devoted housewife and mother; and was also very involved her church. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church; attended the Northeast Bible Study; and was a member of the Naomi Circle. Irene enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a Friday afternoon coffee club. Her love of bowling spanned over 50 years, earning her many honors and trips to state tournaments. She also enjoyed taking pictures, keeping scrapbooks about all of her family, and making crafts; many of which she gave to friends and family. In 2006, Irene began to make her home at Christian Homes Care Community.

Irene especially loved sending birthday and anniversary cards to everyone she knew and even people she didn’t know, just to make them happy. Thus, she was known by many as, “The Card Lady”, and that recognition made her happy.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cecil in 2003; two brothers: Merton “Curly” Madison; and Arlie Madison; along with many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

She leaves to celebrate her life; her two sons: Craig Boston and his wife, Angela of Minden, Nebraska; and Clark Boston of Loveland, Colorado; step-daughter, Cindy Callan and her husband, Ron of Kearney, Nebraska; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and a host of loved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
