The son of the late Edward and Dola (Ontis) Cope, he married the former Freda Czaia in April 1928, in Jerseyville. He was born in Jersey County and worked out of the Carpenters and Mill Wrights Union which he retired from in 1978. Surviving, are his wife; a son, James E. Cope Jr. of Brighton, Colo.; a daughter, Pamela Brown of Alton; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Irene Wadlow and Grace Gunterman,
both of Jerseyville, and Lucille Maples of McClusky.
The body was donated to the St. Louis University School of Medicine.
