Ann Atwood was born in 1776 in Culpeper County, Virginia, where she grew up. She was the daughter of James and Catharine (Fishback) Atwood.

On Nov. 25, 1791, when she was almost 16, Ann was married to James Coons by a Baptist minister in Culpeper County. They had nine children before James died in 1815/6. With four teenage sons to help run the farm, Ann had no pressing need for another husband. She never remarried.

Ann's mother died around 1822, and in 1823 Ann brought her children (including her four young adult sons) to the wilderness of Johnson County, Indiana, where she obtained 160 acres of land. Several of her siblings also moved to Johnson County in the mid-1820s.

In 1830 Ann sold 40 acres each to her sons John, William, and Silas Coons. She sold her remaining 40 acres the following year.

Ann appears in the 1850 census in the household of her eldest son James in Johnson County. She died in 1859 and was buried in Tipton County, Indiana, where her children William and Lucinda had settled.
