He attended grade school there and graduated from high school at the Oak Ridge Military Academy, Oak Ridge, NC in 1931 and from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY in 1936.His other education included the Army War College, Carlisle, PA in1952,Harvard Advanced Management Program, Cambridge, MA in 1956 and the Naval Language School, Anacostia, MD in 1957. His first duty station after graduation from West Point was Ft. Moultrie, Sullivan's Island, SC where he met and married Adelaide Plum O'Neill. Ben served 4 1/2 years in the Pacific during WWII in Hawaii, Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He entered Japan with the first landing craft following the Japanese surrender. Numerous state side assignments included Ft.Monroe, VA, Ft. Benning, GA, the Pentagon, Washington, DC and Ft. Sheridan, IL. During the Korean Conflict, he served as the commander of the 160th Regiment of the 40th Infantry Division. Other overseas assignments include two years in the Republic of Panama as a platoon leader in the 14th Infantry Regiment, three years in Rome, Italy as the Chief of the Army Military Assistance Advisory Group and two years in Frankfort, Germany as Assistant Division Commander of the 3rd Armored Division and Deputy Commander of Fifth Corps. His military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Joint and Army Staff medallions and numerous service medals. In 1968, after the passing of Adelaide, his wife of more than 28 years and 32 years of service, he retired from the army at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois while serving as the Deputy Commanding General of Fifth Army with the rank of Major General. Ben then settled in Charleston, SC, where he married Frances (Fronnie) Baker Allen. During retirement, he was the Senior Warden of the Vestry at Grace Episcopal Church, President of the Charleston Kiwanis Club and a member of several other boards. He was a long time member of the Charleston Country Club, the Carolina Yacht Club and the New England Society. An avid traveler, fisherman and golfer, he greatly enjoyed his avocations with both family and friends.
His wives, Adelaide Plum O'Neill, Charleston SC and Frances Baker Allen, Charleston, SC, predeceased him.
He is survived by his two sons, John O'Neill Turnage (COL USA Ret), Augusta, GA and the Rev. Benjamin Whitfield Turnage, Birmingham, AL and the four children of his second wife, Carl (Chipper) M. Allen, Summerville, SC, Ann A. Harris, Johns Island, SC, Frances (Francie) A. Sadler, Charleston, SC and Elizabeth (Robin) A. Rodenberg, Mt Pleasant, SC; 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden at 11 AM, Friday, June 29, 2007. There will be no visitation. The honorary pallbearers are John O. Turnage, Jr., Taylor W. Turnage, Winston White, William C. McCombs, III, Christopher D. Andrews, Ernst A. Rodenberg IV, Robertson Allen, III, Grier Allen and Legare Leland. Ben will be interred at the National Cemetery, Arlington, VA with his first wife, Adelaide.
