Roy Oller youngest son of Joseph and Elizabeth Oller, was born January 15, 1890 in Griffin, Indiana and died March 18, 1925. The father and three sisters preceded Roy in death, the mother age 74, three brothers, John of Poseyville, Ed of Griffin, Grover of Chicago and three sisters, Mrs. Fred Moore of Indianapolis, Mrs. William Westheideman of Griffin and Mrs, W. H. Warpenburg survive.
Roy maintained a home in Griffin for the mother and brother Ed and was a devoted son. He drove one of the school busses carrying children to Griffin school and came to his death as a result of the fatal injuries while on duty driving the truck full of children to their homes the evening of the storm. As the reached the Cal Vanway farm, two miles north of Griffin, the tornado struck and Roy with four of the children met death or were injured so that death came soon. When help reached the truck Mr. Oller was found with two of the children in is arms-still at the wheel. He lived until he was carried into Alf Brook's home near by. His last words were "Let me be and care for the children." While his death seems untimely, we are comforted to know that he died bravely while on duty trying to protect the children entrusted to his care by mothers and fathers and the township authorities.
Roy was inducted into the United States Army during the World War in May 1918, and was discharged with the rank of corporal in February 1919. He served in the Quartermaster Corps and was stationed at Columbus, Ohio and Charleston South Carolina. He was an active member of the American Legion Post at Griffin and the funeral services were conducted by the Oliver Marquis Post Number 278 of Poseyville. The services were held at the home of the brother, John Oller and the burial was made in the Poseyville cemetery.
