Don Appling, 78, of Plainview and recently of Lubbock, died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Covenant Hospital. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at Rix Funeral Directors, Lubbock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at First United Methodist Church in Plainview with Dr. Lewis Holland officiating and the Rev. Lee Crouch and Dr. Max Browning assisting. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.
He was born June 13, 1929, to Palmer H. and Carrie Hinds Appling in Childress. He graduated from Slaton High School in 1946, attended McMurry College from 1946-47 and graduated from Texas Tech University in 1950. He earned his master's degree in history from Tech in 1958. He taught in Brownfield public schools from 1950-53 and in Levelland public schools from 1953-58. He was the Hockley County Democratic Chairman from 1953-58. Don was a charter professor at South Plains College in Levelland where he taught until 1966. After attending the University of Texas Law School for two years, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he was a legislative assistant for George Mahon. From 1968-80, he worked as office manager and comptroller in the irrigation pipe manufacturing business with his brothers in Ulysses, Kan. While in Ulysses, he was part-owner of a lumber yard with his brother, Pat. He also was secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Rotary Club. He lived in Canton where he co-owned and operated a feed and fertilizer operation with his brother, Jon. He lived for a short time in Kerrville before moving back to Plainview in 1982 where he worked at Edmonson Co-op Gin until 1988. He worked for H&R Block from 1988-98 when he retired. He was active in First United Methodist Church in Plainview and acted as head usher from 1985 until April when he was hospitalized. He was a kind and loving brother and uncle. He had many close friends.
Honorary pallbearers are J.J. Barlow, Tommy Davis, Bill Green, Max Miller, Billy Reed, Gerald Sandusky, Kelly Sears, R.C. Stevens and Roy Varley.
He was preceded in death by one brother, the Rev. W.A. Appling of Amarillo, and three sisters, Melba Harris of Tulia, Mary Davis of Plainview and Elouise Jones of Lubbock.
He is survived by two brothers, Jon Appling of Kerrville and Pat Appling of Lubbock; and 15 nieces and nephews.
