Veteran Public Official Suffers
Severe Stroke at Funeral
Wednesday Morning

Suffering with a sudden stroke, M. V. Canavan, veteran Beckham county official was lingering at the point of death Wednesday afternoon and attending physicians held little hope for his recovery.

The pioneer public oficial,(sic) county clerk here for the past 20 years, suffered the stroke about 11 o'clock Wednesday morning while he was attending the funeral of his intiment(sic) friend, Levi Young, assistant county assessor, which was being held at the First Methodist church.

Was Pall Bearer
He was acting as honorary pall bearer and his condition was not noticed until the funera! was over. He failed to rise with the other pall bearers and it was not known how long he had been stricken.

Physicians reported late this afternoon that his condition was still critical. The right side of his body was paralyzed(sic) and he had lost his power of speech. He was said to be at ine point of death and that he might not live through the night. He was in a semi-conscious state, it was said.

Relatives have been called to his bedside.

Funeral Services Are Held At 10
o'clock At First Baptist
Church: Died Thursday

Last tribute to M. V. Canavan, for 20 years the guardian of Beckham county's coffers who died suddenly Thursday morning as the result of a stroke, was paid at 10 o'clock Friday morning at the funeral services held at the First Baptist church.

Rev. John T. Daniel, Oklahoma City, former Sayre pastor, and Rev. L. B. Alder, pastor, presided at the rites. Interment was made at the Sayre-Doxey cemetery with the Littrell-Johnson funeral home in charge. The Masonic lodge of which he was a member conducted special rites at the grave.

Mr. Canavan succumbed at 4 o'clock Thursday morning, 17 Spurs after he suffered a hemorahage(sic) of the brain while attending the funeral of his long-time friend, Levi Young, deputy county assessor, at the First Methodist Church. Mr, Young had died suddenly at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon and his funeral services were being held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning.

Stricken Suddenly
Mr. Canavan was acting as honorary pall bearer at the funeral. His condition was not noticed until the funeral procession started to leave the church. He was found to be in a paralysed condition when he did not rise. He was removed to his home where he rallied for a short while but sunk rapidly, death following early Thursday morning.

Considered one of the outstanding authorities on county government, taxes and county finances, Mr. Canavan was known through out western Oklahoma and the state. He served as county clerk of Beckham County from January 1, 1917, until his death. Last year he served as president of the Oklahoma County Officers' association and was serving as president of the Kiwanis club, local cicic organization, at the time of his passing.

Business Firms Close
A majority of the business firms here in Sayre were closed during the funeral in tribute to the veteran county officer, whose records at the courthouse are considered by authorities as among the best in Oklahoma.

He was active in church work and political circles. He was the first president of the Beckham County Baptist Brotherhood.

He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Evaden and Mary Beth; one sister, Miss Mary Canavan of Elk City; and three brothers, J. L. Canavan, J. C. Canavan and E. A. Canavan, all of Elk City; and W. P. Canavan of Oklahoma City.
