Verna June Downs, 90, of Freeport, IL, passed away on January 3, 2020 at Walnut Acres in Freeport. She was born on June 4, 1929 in Freeport to Walter Lee Boyd and Nelda Florissa (Oakes) Boyd. She was a graduate of Freeport High School and on June 19, 1949, married George William Downs at Embury Methodist Church in Freeport. She was a member of Embury Methodist Church and the Sweet Adelines, both many years ago. Her occupations included Honeywell/Expeditor and Apartment Manager.
Survivors include her son Keith Downs and daughter-in-law Mary Murphy Downs, both of Monroe, WI; daughter Kathy Peterson and son-in-law Brian Peltier, both of Sandwich, MA; granddaughters Kristie Lynn Peterson of San Diego, CA, Lori Jean Peterson of S. Deerfield, MA, Cherie Lorraine Peterson of Uxbridge, MA; and great-granddaughter Athena Conway of S. Deerfield, MA.
She was preceded in death by her spouse George William Downs (07/27/1989) in Freeport, IL; father Walter Lee Boyd (1961) in Freeport, IL; mother Nelda Florissa Oakes (11/30/1976) in Freeport, IL; sister Wilma Leola Bowen (05/17/1984) in Freeport, IL; brother Marvin Boyd (02/01/1987) in Manatee, FL; brother Milford Oakes Boyd (03/14/1995) in Alameda, CA; and sister Norma L. Lawver (2014) in Freeport, IL.
A private family Celebration of Life will be held later this summer. Cremation rites have been accorded and inurnment will be in Oakland Cemetery in Freeport.
