John was brought to Canada by the British Immigration and Colonization Association. He arrived in March of 1927 aboard the S.S. Arabic. After arrival, John was placed with Mr. W. H. Scott in Gananoque. In August that same year, John was out boating with some companions in the St. Lawrence River in a boat the proved to be leaky. His companion Henry Eadie fell into the river, and John jumped in and saved him. Sadly, John, drowned while saving the life of his companion.
