Norman was born in Jordan Township, Green County, Wisconsin, the son of H. Morgan Johnson & Frieda (Lauper) Johnson. Norman married Patricia E. Thorp on January 8, 1954, in Madison, Wisconsin. He was a dairy farmer in Green and LaFayette Counties (Wisconsin) until 1975, when he moved to Argyle and worked at Frito-Lay in Monroe, Wisconsin, and Mount Horeb Co-op from which he retired in 2001.

He served in the U.S. Army in the 31st Field Artillery Battalion during the Korean Conflict.

Norman & Pat were the parents of 7 children, 6 of whom survive. He is further survived by 11 grandchildren and a sister. Pat died in 1999.
