He served in the U.S. Army, 1952-1954. The U.S. Veterans Grave Sites, 1775-2006 was the source for locating his final resting place.

Melvin was a first cousin to Ernest Otto Griffin, a son of Bertie Maiton Herring and Joseph Thomas Griffin. Melvin's father, Edgar Allen Herring, and Otto's mother, Bertie Maiton Herring, were siblings.

It is interesting to note that while Melvin Herring and Otto Griffin were first cousins, so too were their wives. Pauline Hayward Herring's mother, Ida Mae Greenlaw Hayward, and Hazel's mother, Hazel Greenlaw Fitzsimmons were sisters.
