A Celebration of Life service for Dan Thompson Bates, 74, of Williston, SC will be held at three o’clock p.m., Sunday, December 29, 2019 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston with U. S. Military Honors accorded; Lloyd Ward and Reverend Tom Baker will be officiating. The family will receive friends from one-thirty p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home on Sunday. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Williston and Elko Fire Departments and the Tuesday Night Supper Club. Memorials may be given in Dan’s memory to Omar Shrine Center, Greenville Hospital Donation, 176 Patriot’s Point Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Dan passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2019.
Born in Barnwell County, SC, he was the son of the late Thompson Bates and Irene Renew Bates. Dan was a graduate of Williston-Elko High School and received his degree from Nashville Auto Diesel College. He was a US Navy Veteran having served during the Vietnam War. Dan was a farmer, formerly worked for Southeastern Equipment Company, and retired from the Savannah River Site. He attended Elko Baptist Church. He was a reserve deputy and constable for Barnwell County and for more than 20 years, he was a member of Williston and Elko Fire Departments. Dan was a co-founder of the Lower State Fire Fighters Association, taught Hunter Education classes, was a building code inspector and was a committee member for the Barnwell County Water Fowl Association. He enjoyed fishing, gigging fish, duck hunting, riding in his truck, cooking and visiting with his family and friends.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Janice Spence Bates; his sons Thompson (Pat) Bates, Adam Bates all of Elko; the stars of his life his grand girls Gracie and Camberlyn.
