Missing Aircraft is Found
Laredo – The burned wreckage of a single-engine aircraft missing with four Rio Grande persons since March 27, was found Saturday in heavy brush country 36 miles southeast of Laredo.
Four bodies, burned and decomposed, were recovered from the scene and returned to Laredo funeral homes. They were identified as Tomas Pena, 20, brothers Homer Garza, 17, and Felix Garza, 19, all of San Isidro in Starr County and Jim Auld, 25, of Edinburg.
Funeral arrangements for the Garza brothers in San Isidro and Pena in Santa Elena will be announced by Ceballos Funeral Home of Rio Grande City. Wilson Funeral Home of McAllen has charge of the Auld funeral arrangements.
Webb County Sheriff P.L. Flores said Pena and Homer Garza were identified by relatives at the scene. The bodies of the other two men were badly burned and later identified at the funeral homes.
The aircraft, a Piper Cherokee 180, was identified as the one piloted by Auld when it took off from the Laredo Municipal Airport last Saturday night. Airport personnel said there were three other young men with Auld in the plane.
The airplane was identified by the registration number 7583-W on the tail, which was the only section of the aircraft that did not burn. It crashed on the Ernesto Ramirez ranch off State Highway 359 near the small town of Aguilares.
It was spotted around 7:30 a.m. Saturday by U.S. Border Patrol pilot Dale Burt of Laredo to end a week-long search up and down the valley for the missing plane. Burt had been in the air about 40 minutes, flying low in the area when he spotted the wreckage.
The Border Patrol pilot radioed the Webb County dispatcher at Laredo and sheriff deputies and two local ambulances rushed to the scene.
Don Morgan, an experienced pilot and operator of the local airport, said the plane apparently went down nose first in bad weather. Low clouds and light rain had been reported southeast of Laredo at the time Auld took off late last Saturday night.
Auld, a junior music student at Pan American College in Edinburg, had rented the four-seat aircraft on March 26 from Young Aviation in Harlingen.
The student pilot did not file a flight plan with the Federal Aviation Agency, but he told Laredo Airport attendants that he was flying to the Diamond O Ranch near San Isidro.
Civil Air Patrol and Border Patrol aircraft began searching the Laredo-McAllen area last Sunday after the aircraft was reported missing.
About 20 aircraft from Laredo, McAllen and Harlingen joined the fruitless search Monday.
Low clouds and drizzle grounded aircraft for the next three days, although a helicopter from Laredo AFB combed the Hebronville area late Tuesday afternoon.
The pilot checked out reports about a plane crash in the Jim Hogg County area until sundown without any luck. The search was resumed Friday but without any success.
Officers praised pilot Burt’s flying, which enabled him to spot the wreckage.
Morgan said Burt had to be flying low “because it’s difficult to spot anything from the air in that heavy brush.”
Morgan explained that an experienced pilot could have landed the aircraft in the heavy brush and survived.
