Bill was born in Gray Court, South Carolina, and during his first fifteen years, he alternated his home between Gray Court ( for one year) and Nigeria, Africa ( for three years). His parents, Dr. Ira Newborn Patterson and Sara Lou Bobo Patterson, were missionaries in Africa for fifty years.
When Bill reached the age of fifteen, he had to stay behind to finish his education. He attended Campbell College to bridge into Wake Forest University. While at Wake Forest, he was a state champion in tennis several times.
After college, he entered the Army for four years, and chose his last assignment, Albuquerque, New Mexico, as his home for many years. He moved back to his family’s home in Gray Court after retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Constance Patterson of Gray Court, his son, Steven Andrew Patterson who is living in England, and four grandchildren: Sean, Samantha, Tristan, and Alexandria. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sheila Patterson Willey (David), of Albuquerque.
