She met her husband-to-be, Louis “Buddy” Dement, through a mutual friend, and they were married on July 3, 1965. It was one of the happiest days of her life. Two children followed, and after a few years of staying home and caring for her children, she returned to work and eventually earned the position of Senior Vice President at Commonwealth Mortgage.
After retirement, she involved herself in family life and enjoyed having more time to spend reading, and also became involved with some quilting groups, one of which sewed donation items for various charity groups, hospice facilities, and hospitals. She particularly enjoyed participating in the “Pillowcase Sew-In” days, when the group sewed for 24 hours straight making pillowcases to be donated to hospice. She also enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and pencil puzzles such as word searches, crosswords, cryptographs, and Sudoku. She re-discovered the joy of coloring when adult coloring books began being published.
Bette left this earth on December 14, 2019. She is preceded in death by her mother, Daisy Bates, her father, Frank Bates, and her sister Jeanne Nivens, as well as two brothers-in-law, David LeJeune and Michael Nivens. She is survived by her husband, Louis “Buddy” Dement, her daughter Sheri Dement, her son Jerry Dement and his children Jarrett (Hali), Harmony, and Katrina. She is also survived by her sister Lisa LeJeune, her nieces Chelsea LeJeune Olivares (Jose), Ashley LeJeune, her nephew Justin LeJeune, and her nieces Traci and Staci Nivens.
