In about 1786 appointed Collector of Customs for Port of Saint John.

In July 1783 he was in New York and a petitioner for lands in Nova Scotia.

In 1801 he went to England accompanied by his lady in the mast - ship Duke of Kent.

His widow died at Exeter, England in 1824.

To the Memory of William Wanton, Esq., late Collector of His Majesty's Customs at the Port of Saint John, New Brunswick, which office he filled with Honour and Integrity upwards of Thirty years. He died 30th May, 1816, aged 82 years, Much lamented and respected by his friends and a numerous public.
