Luman Bartholomew was born in Bristol (then New Cambridge), Hartford County, Connecticut, son of Isaac and Lydia (Deming) Bartholomew. He was their first child of ten. He moved with his parents to Tinmouth, Vermont about 1786 and on to Madrid (that part now Waddington, St. Lawrence County, New York in 1801.

Luman Bartholomew married in Waddington, St. Lawrence, New York 14 May 1812 to Lydia Daniels (1791-1879).

Captain Bartholomew commanded a company in the war of 1812 as did his father. He was a farmer at Waddington and Potsdam, New York, moving to McHenry County, Illinois in 1842. He purchased 40 acres of land in the SW 1/4 of the NW 14 of Section 35, now a part of the city of McHenry. He likely was buried on his land there.
