Died: Christchurch, New Zealand
It has been said that Thomas's parents employed Rosannah as a servant and when their son fell in love and married Rosannah who was a widow with three children, they were sent to the Antipodes. I feel this is probably a romantic idea of why they came over.
Thomas was a labourer. He and Rosannah owned a Boarding house and stables where the Addington Sale Grounds, Riccarton are now.
He was also a butcher by trade. He arrived at Lyttelton (Canterbury, NZ) in 1859 (McDonalds Biographical Dictionary) and he and John ROWLEY went into partnership as butchers. They leased part of T.S. 883, which was later Ballantyne's corner section at 10 Pounds per annum; but they were further along in Colombo Street. They assigned their lease 17 June 1861 to Samuel GOODMAN, Shoemaker. Later Thomas was in partnership with J.G. HART and later still with James NICHOLSON January 1865.
Invented a boot fastener and applied for patent of this shortly before his death...was not completed.
Buried with his wife Rosannah
Cause of death: Enlarged prostate and urine suppression
