Williams-Died at 10:50 o'clock, Friday morning, July 24, 1908, at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Minerva Dunlap McClernand, 1716 South Sixth street, after an illness of five years, from complications, which developed into a general break down. Mrs. Helen McClernand Williams, wife of Edward Williams of Hawthorne Place, Springfield, aged 36 years, 1 month and 11 days.
Although she had been ill for the past five years with a complication of diseases, and when a general break down developed and hope for her recovery was abandoned, her remarkable vitality prolonged the life of Mrs. Williams for some time. Ten days ago the end became apparent, but with the characteristics of her soldier father, she being the youngest daughter of the late General John A. McClernand, she fought with determination and the quality of endurance to the very end. Remarkable patience and fortitude were characteristics of her illness.
Deceased was born in this city on June 13, 1872, having resided here all her life. She attained her education in the public schools of Springfield, and was a young woman of many accomplishments, a favorite in society. She was of a family which has had much to do with the history of Springfield, of Sangamon county, of Illinois, and of the nation. On Jan. 21, 1895 her marriage to Edward Williams, now assistant chief secretary of the Springfield election commission, was celebrated. While her death has been daily expected the loss of Mrs. Williams will be seriously felt by her many friends in this city.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband and her mother, both of this city; one sister, Mrs. Rose McClernand Fox, wife of Fred Fox, formerly of this city, but now of Peoria; and two brothers, Colonel Edward J. McClernand, of the United States army, now located in the Philippine Islands, and John F. McClernand of Port Erie, Ontario, Canada.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the home of her mother, Mrs. Minerva Dunlap McClernand, 1716South Sixth street, the Rev. A.P. Higley, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church, officiating. The services at the grave will, at the request of the deceased, be private, and attended only by the immedicate relatives. The interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.
