s/o Alfred J. & Elizabeth Mooney Gulley, h/o Virginia Hillis GulleyRobert Nelson Gulley was the first born son of Alfred J Gulley 1819 – 1896 and Elizabeth (Betsy) Mooney 1826 – 1905. His siblings were: Mary A Gulley 1848; Larkin Gulley 1854 – 1894; James Herman Gulley 1855 – 1941; James W Gulley 1856 – 1940; Sarah R. Gulley 1859 – 1926; Millard Fillmore Gulley 1861 – 1948; Henry Clay Gulley 1863 – 1958; Laury Gulley 1865 – 1952 and John Wesley Gulley 1870 – 1961.

In about 1878 Robert married Virginia "Jennie" Hillis. From this union the following known children were born: Lea F Gulley 1881 – 1979; Leon F Gulley 1881 – 1979; Minnie Gulley 1885 – 1923; Linnie Irene Gulley 1889 and Lou Gully 1889 – 1979.

The 1880 census found Robert and Jennie farming in District 8, Van Buren, Tennessee.

In the 1900 census they were still living at the same place. Robert had dropped the name Robert and he was listed as Nelson. Jennie had given birth to 4 children and 3 were living.

The 1910 proved that Nelson and Jennie owned their home and farm, debt free.

Tennessee, Death Records, confirm that Jennie Gulley passed away on Aug. 4, 1922. This was a sad day for Nelson. A burial plot was chosen her in the Hillis Cemetery in Van Buren County, Tennessee where he laid his beloved Jennie to rest.

Tennessee, Death Records, confirm that Minnie Gulley, the daughter of Nelson and Jennie passed away on Sept. 2, 1923, from a ruptured duodenal ulcer.

Two days later Tennessee, Death Records, confirm that Nelson Gulley was the postmaster, and he passed away on Sept 4, 1923. His death certificate revealed that he had been suffering with Colitis and the cause of his death was chronic catarrhal colitis.

Jennie, Maggie, and Nelson are all buried in the Hillis Cemetery in Van Buren County, Tennessee where they "Rest in Peace." (Bio by Audrey DeCamp Hoffman)
