Don's story began on the hills of Eastern Oklahoma near the city of Vian on a cold night on February 17, 1932 to Arthur & Mary Ann Brumley. A midwife helped his mother with the delivery and mistakenly wrote the name Homer Brumer on his birth certificate. That matter was quickly resolved by everyone referring to him as Don. Don loved to tell stories of his childhood of him and his little brother Floyd running around the hills and swimming in the creeks. During World War II, Arthur and Mary Ann moved their family of six, Don, Floyd, Christine and Ann to Oakland, CA so Arthur could work on ships in the Oakland Naval Shipyard. While in Oakland, brother Bill was added to the family.

Upon conclusion of World War II Arthur and Mary Ann moved again, this time settling in Stone Corral, CA. The family worked all over the farms in Tulare County of the Central San Joaquin Valley in California. The family was blessed with daughter Helen during this time.
