Marian Lloyd Rice was born on January 8, 1890, in Albany, New York. She was the daughter and only child of Charles Harris and Elizabeth Wheeler Rice. (Her Florida death certificate says she was born on January 18, 1895 in Albany).

From the 1905 and 1915 New York state censuses as well as the 1910 and 1920 Federal censuses, Marian grew up in Albany, New York.

According to her 1918 passport application, Marian Rice had resided in Paris, France, from October 1911 to June 1, 1912. There is a record on Ancestry that shows Marian was onboard the S.S. Oceanic, leaving from Cherbourg, France, on May 29, 1912, and arriving at New York City on June 6, 1912. Perhaps Marian was attending school at Paris during that time. The S.S. Oceanic was probably the one operated by White Star and built by Harland & Wolff, Ltd, Belfast, Ireland in 1899.

In her passport application, dated May 28, 1918, she hoped to leave from New York City on June 6, 1918, destined for France. Marian was to do canteen work for the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) as a volunteer for service amongst the troops of the American Expeditionary Forces in France.

She was described as being five feet, seven inches in height; oval face shape; high forehead; straight nose; medium mouth and chin; light brown hair and blue eyes; fair complexion.

On August 27, 1920, Marian Lloyd Rice and Walter Booth Brooks, Jr, were married in Towson, Maryland.

They had one child, Leonard Rice Brooks, born on September 5, 1921, in Baltimore, Maryland. From his first marriage, Walter Brooks Jr, was the father of Louise Brooks and Walter Booth Brooks III. A third child Angela Brooks was born and died in 1918.

The 1930 Federal census showed Walter and Marian Brooks residing in Baltimore with all four children: Walter B III aged 15; Louse aged 17; and Leonard aged 9. Walter Brooks Jr was working as a contracting engineer, involved in building bridges.

Walter Brooks Jr died on March 25, 1937, in Ruxton, Baltimore County, Maryland. He was buried at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery in Owning Mills, Maryland.

In the 1940 Federal census, Marian Brooks was listed as a widow and working as a hostess. Leonard was in his first year of college. They were residing at The Charles Apartments on North Charles St, Baltimore.

Marian’s son Leonard Rice Brooks enlisted on February 9, 1942, as a private in the U.S. Army. He was described as six feet, three inches in height and 173 pounds.

There is a record on Ancestry for Leonard Rice Brooks, aged 21, of Garrison, Maryland, and Mary Elizabeth Barbary, aged 25, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, applying for a marriage license on July 4, 1943, and recorded in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, records. It was signed by Joe H. Childers, Court Clerk; and C.C. Beers (?), Deputy.

Leonard Rice Brooks and Mary Elizabeth Barbary were married on July 4, 1943, with Joe F Acebo, Justice of the Peace, officiating, in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Perhaps Mary Elizabeth Barbary was really Mary Elizabeth Barbero. She died in 2004 and apparently never(?) married.

On March 24, 1945, Private First Class Leonard R Brooks, was killed in the Netherlands. He was part of the 507th Parachute Infantry, 17th Airborne. He was buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
