Pennsylvania Deaths 15917 (1937)

Daniel Strayer of 309 Sixteenth street, Duncansville, victim of an automobile mishap at a curve in the highway near the Colonel John S. Vipond farm east of New Portage junction, known as the Bluff early Saturday evening, died at the Mercy hospital yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock.

Mr. Strayer, who was walking on the highway on his way to his home from Hollidaysburg, was struck by a car driven by Earl Edward Plank of 714 Seventh avenue this city. Plank was traveling westward and did not see Mr. Strayer until the car struck him. The injured man was brought to the hospital where he was admitted at 7:30 o’clock. He was badly hurt and did not regain consciousness.

Daniel Strayer was a son of John and Lucinda (Butler) Strayer and was born at Ore Hill on Oct. 11, 1877. He was united in marriage forty-one years ago with Miss Mary Yon of Duncansville, who survives, with four children, Mrs. John Layden, Mrs. Minnie Baker and George Harvey Strayer, all of Youngstown, O., and Mrs. Barney Mushrush of Girard, O.; one brother, Harvey Strayer of Duncansville; two sisters, Mrs. Harriet Davis of Duncansville and Mrs. Izora McGreagor of Mines, and four grandchildren.

In his younger days Mr. Strayer worked at the iron mills in Duncansville and when they closed down he went to McKeesport where he was a member of the city police for twelve years, returning to Duncansville two years ago. He had been employed by the state highway department out of the Hollidaysburg office.

Mr. Strayer was a noted marksman and took an active part in shooting contests. This is the second tragic death in the family. A brother, Eli Strayer, met a tragic death on the New Portage railroad west of Duncansville on Jan. 21, 1927, when he and a companion, Leo Rhodes of Newry, were run down by a train while walking on the railroad.

The body will be taken to the home this evening from the Bechtel funeral home in Williamsburg and it may be viewed there after 7.30 o’clock. Funeral services will be conducted in the Hicks Memorial Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2.30 o’clock, the cortege leaving the home at 2.15 o’clock, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Fred Baker Norris. Interment will be made in the Carson Valley cemetery.
