Channing D. Strother - Arlington Postmaster
Channing D. Strother, 83, who retired in 1972 as acting postmaster of Arlington, died of cancer Jan. 19 at his home in Falls Church.
Mr. Strother was born in Linden, Va., and he graduated from what then was Columbus Law School in Washington. During World War II, he served in the Army in Europe.
He joined the Post Office Department after the war, and he served in Washington and in Arlington, where he became assistant postmaster.
After retiring from the post office, he opened Arlington Postacraft, a silk-screen printing shop. Until his death, he was a partner with his son John in operating this business.
His avocations included gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Smith Strother of Fall Church; three sons, Channing D. Strother Jr. of Potomac, John Strother of Arlington and Tom Strother of San Francisco; one sister, Josephine Richelsen of Arlington; and two grandsons.
