He and Sallie Marie Mayes were married December 8, 1878 in Washington County, Arkansas.

Sallie died August 4, 1943 and is thought to have been buried beside her husband's unmarked grave in Combs Chapel Cemetery south east of Fayetteville. Her grave is still only marked with the original small metal temporary Funeral Home Marker.
