Jim died unexpectedly June 9, 2007, at his home in Salt Lake City. He was born on June 14, 1941, to Glen and Vera Barber in Holladay Utah. Jim graduated from the University of Utah Law School and practiced law in Salt Lake City for 37 years. Despite life-long health issues Jim was active and adventurous. He enjoyed tennis, skiing, golf (until he got trifocals) and pretty much lived the way he wanted. Jim appreciated music of all kinds. In his youth he played several instruments and became an especially accomplished pianist. He spent most of his spare time reading or "puttering" in his workshop. Examples of his craftsmanship can be found in the homes of family and many friends. Jim was known for his humor, eclectic vocabulary and ability to tell a great story. Beneath his gruff demeanor Jim had a big heart. He was generous and encouraged a tradition of giving in his grandchildren by spearheading an annual holiday trip to the food bank known as the "Turkey Trot". Jim's greatest joy was his 11 grandchildren. He had a special relationship with each one and encouraged their individual interests and talents. He was happiest when his whole family was together during the holidays or hanging around the pool.
Jim is survived by Brenda, his wife of 41 years his children, LeAnn Saldivar (Pete), Leslee Sheffield (Stan), and Jason Barber (Sharlie). Grandchildren: Alex, Alyssa, Andrea, Amanda, Erin, Sydney, Natalie, Sam, Eliza, Erica and Jacob. Sisters: Jane Lambert and Suzee Packard.
Jim will be remembered at a private gathering of family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Salt Lake. The family welcomes your memories, stories or "Jim-isms".
