He was born October 8, 1922 in Camden, Arkansas. He graduated from Camden High School, attending the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville prior to entering the United States Army in 1943. Dr. Sullenberger received the Purple Heart for injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. After his discharge from the Army, he entered the University of Arkansas Medical School, graduating in 1951. Dr. Sullenberger received further training in general and thoracic surgery and opened his office for practice in Pine Bluff in 1956, where he worked tirelessly for 31 years. He was a member of the Lakeside Methodist Church and the Pine Bluff Country Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn Dunn Sullenberger, and a son, Edward Sullenberger. He is survived by his two sons, Steve Sullenberger and his wife, Sally, and Tommy Sullenberger of Hot Springs; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, one brother, David Sullenberger of Little Rock; his sister, Betty Jagoditsh of Hot Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 26, 2006 at 10:30 AM in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son with Reverend Jim Brooks officiating. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Class of 1951 Endowment, College of Medicine Alumni Affairs, 4301 West Markham #642, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205-7199.
