Springfield, NH - Joseph R. Demarais, 77, "CPO Joe" of Eastman Access Road died at his home suddenly on July 2, 2007. He was born in Worcester, MA on April 30, 1930, the son of Napoleon and Alice (Paul) Demarais. He had lived in Massachusetts, Virginia and Rhode Island before moving to Springfield in 1994. Mr. Demarais had served in the US Navy for 22 years, retiring in 1967 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He later worked for many years at Jay Printing in Warwick, RI. Since moving to Springfield, he had been active in the Kearsarge Council on Aging's volunteer driver program and its outdoor recreation activities. Mr. Demarais had also devoted many hours to the programs at the Libbie Cass Library in Springfield. He was a devout Catholic who enjoyed reading, Big Band music, kayaking, cheering for the Red Sox and was always interested in keeping current with all aspects of military traditions. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Demarais was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Bertrand, two sons, David and Daniel, a grandson, Michael and a granddaughter, Ashlee.

Members of his family surviving include his wife of 52 years, Carol (Ekberg) Demarais of Springfield, NH; 5 children and their spouses, Ronald Demarais of Ashaway, RI, Michael and Wendy Demarais of Carolina, RI, Mark Demarais of W. Warwick, RI, Jeff and Rhonda Demarais of Coventry, RI and Carolyn and Ray Kershaw of Springfield, NH; 6 grandchildren, Stefanie, Brittany, Amanda and Jeffrey Demarais of Rhode Isaland and Josh and Zach Kershaw of Springfield, NH; four sisters, Joan Wieliczko of Holderness, NH, Pauline Girard of Tolland, CT, Jacquelyn Cardinal of Worcester, MA and Theresa Columbe of Sturbridge, MA; a cousin and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St., New London, NH on Sunday, July 8 from 2 - 4 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday July 9 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima church, Main St., New London with Rev. Dennis Keaton, a friend of the family, as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM in the NH Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Libbie Cass Library Library, PO BOx 89, Springfield, NH 03284 or Our Lady of LaSalette Shrine, PO Box 420, Enfield, NH 03748.
