"Zenas C. Thornburg (July 14, 1872-May 5, 1925) was a key figure in the history of Highland Park College and Des Moines University. He graduated from Highland Park College and Drake Law School and had an illustrious career in education in Des Moines. He served for five years as the Polk County Superintendent of Education, two years as a faculty member at Highland Park College, and three years as the Des Moines schools 'supervisor of grades' as of 1911. He was also on the board of directors of the Iowa Investment Company (Brigham, II. 1021). He was superintendent of schools (1913-20) and the city postmaster. Thornburg Memorial Fieldhouse, the last building constructed at Des Moines University, honored him [Register May 7 , 8, 1925]"
