Joseph and Nancy were married in 1840 were married in Ohio. After the death of their first child in 1842 they decided to move to the Illinois Territory. Joseph was a boat pilot and so the decided to move by boat, going down the Ohio River, over to the Mississippi and up to Albany, Illinois, arriving there in 1844.
