Gustave T. Standfuss, age 88, of Danube died Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia. Funeral services are Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Danube with Rev. Michael Kuschel officiating. Burial with military rites is in St. Matthew's South Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday 5-8 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to Renville County Hospice or Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Gustave Theodore Standfuss was born February 27, 1924 on the family farm in Emmet Township, rural Renville, MN to Theodore and Augusta (Seehusen) Standfuss. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church and attended country school. He then assisted his family on the farm for several years.
Gus served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Central European Rhineland Theatre from 1944-1946. Gus attained the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge he returned to Renville County where he continued to farm and became a part-time police officer. In 1978 Gus became Danube's police chief which he served faithfully until 1991.
Gus married Anna Groen on March 16, 1950 at St. Matthew's Church and they were the parents of 10 children. Anna preceded him in death in 1996 and later he married Jean Wendinger.
Gus was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, the Danube American Legion for over 50 years and the Police Federation. He enjoyed hunting, especially deer hunting, fishing, farming and vacationing with his family.
Gus is survived by his children: Pauline, Bruce, Phil, Mary, Debora, Susan and Brenda; his 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his two sisters: Ella Barber and Amanda Hines; and his former wife Jean Standfuss.
Gus was preceded in death by his first wife Anna Standfuss; sons Curtis, Steven and Calvin; son-in-law Alan Gustafson; and his grandson John Michael DeGroot.
