Rita Rose Barbour Vertz, 69, went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2000, at a local hospital.

She was born in Angier, N.C., and was a retired voucher examiner of the U.S. Navy after 28 years of service. She was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Vertz; a daughter, Brenda J. Sims and her husband, Charles, of Chesapeake; two stepdaughters, Gloria Sowle and her husband, Steve, of Arkansas, and Joyce Goodman and her husband, Charles, of Virginia Beach; a son, Randy B. Page and his wife, Connie, of Chesapeake; a stepson, David Vertz of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Ozella Adams of Angier, N.C., and Hilda Gibbs and her husband, Forest, of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, David Gentry, Ryan Gentry, Lisa Hampton and Lovie Heilig; 11 stepgrandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eastminster Presbyterian Church with Pastor Robert Hobson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
