He retired in 1969 as a professor of mathematics from Concord College. He was a member of the Athens Baptist Church. He was a 1925 graduate of Concord College and received his masters degree from West Virginia University. He was a past district governor of the Lions Club, a past president of the Concord College Alumni Association, and a charter member of the Presidents Club. He received the Golden Alumnus Award from the association in 1972. Before beginning his tenure at Concord in 1946, he worked as a principal, teacher and coach in the Wyoming County Schools for 21 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray Bailey and Virgil Bailey, and two sisters, Grace West and Inez Blanton.
Survivors: wife, Violet Maynor Bailey; nieces, Barbara West of New York City, N.Y., and Katherine Pinkerton of Washington, D.C.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Oakwood Park Cemetery at Princeton with the Rev. Frank Ted Reid officiating. Those attending the service are asked to meet at the cemetery by service hour. There will be no visitation.
