Elsie Gladys Taft, 95, of Springfield, was born February 13, 1911, in Boone County, Arkansas, to James Andrew Birdwell and Mary Alice (Chandler) Birdwell and died July 19, 2006.

Before marriage, she was a one-room country school teacher at Shady Grove and Hilltop schools near Harrison, Arkansas.

On August 11, 1940, Gladys married William K. Taft who predeceased her in 1991. She was a member at Central Assembly of God Church.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn Jeanine Taft and five sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include one daughter, Rosemary McLaren and her husband, Robert, of Columbia, Missouri three grandsons, Greg McLaren, Charles McLaren and his wife, Cecilia, and Jeffrey McLaren and his wife, Lily and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Gladys Taft will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2006, in the Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home, 1635 N. Benton, Springfield, Missouri. The Reverend David Drake will officiate. A visitation will take place prior to the service beginning at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in the Hazelwood Cemetery.
