William Edward “Bill” Allen
William Edward “Bill” Allen, longtime Browns Park, Utah/Colorado cattle rancher and resident of Rock Springs, Wyo. and Vernal, Utah, died Oct. 31, 2004, at his home in Vernal. He was 91.
Allen was born July 10, 1913, in Cedarview, Utah, he was the fourth of five children born to the union of Warren Leslie Allen, Jr. and Elnora (Green) Allen.
His mother’s great-grandparents were Mormon settlers who came west to Utah in 1852 with the Pioneer Handcart Company.
From before the age of 10, Allen earned his own living and helped support the rest of his family by herding sheep, putting up hay, and doing other ranch jobs in the Vernal area while also regularly attending school.
As a teenager, he made his way over Diamond Mountain to the valley of Browns Park, Utah, and went to work on the C.M. Taylor Ranch.
On Sept. 22, 1932, he married Taylor’s daughter, Marie. Together the couple cherished a pioneer lifestyle and built a successful cattle ranching operation called Allen Livestock, while lovingly raising a large family.
Keeping the ranch headquarters in Browns Park, they owned the Brown’s Park Livestock Ranch, the Toothatcher Ranch at Encampment, Wyo., and the Red Creek Ranch, located just northeast of Brown’s Park in Wyoming. Also, for many years, they leased the Patjanella Ranch east of Browns Park in Colorado.
After his wife Marie’s death in 1975, Allen married Ella (Gurr) Shiner and moved to Vernal. However, he remained involved with the family cow/calf and yearling operation with his youngest son Robert Carl “Bob” Allen until Bob’s death in 1993. At that time, Allen’s cattle ranching way of life came to an end.
In 2000, Allen’s wife, Ella, passed away.
Throughout the years, Allen enjoyed sharing his knowledge about Browns Park’s outlaw past and telling about ranching there, in days gone by, and he was often interviewed and quoted.
He starred in a television documentary about Browns Park and appeared in books and magazines.
His life story is prominently featured in the book, “The Romantic and Notorious History of Browns Park,” written by his daughter.
Allen is survived by his children, Lucille (Bill) Fleming, Charles (Mieko) Allen, William L. Allen, Nonie Allen, and Diana (Mike) Kouris; his grandchildren, David Fleming, Nancy Jerome, Nina Garland, Lance Allen, Tonja Bell, William “Billy” Allen, Candace Lewis, Marie Rosenllini, Brent David, Ginger Wheeler, Rick Allen, Nick Kouris; 12 great grandchildren; sisters Verda Bachelor, and Winona Foarr; and brothers, Gale Christensen, Jay Christensen and Neil Christensen.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents; step-father Joseph Emanuel Christensen; his wives; Marie Allen and Ella Allen; three children, Billie Dee Allen, Barbara Lee Allen, and Robert Carl Allen; two sisters, Lela Bae and Zora Gurr, and one brother, Delphus Allen.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at the Vernal 1st Ward LDS Chapel at 850 West 100 North in Vernal, Utah.
Family and friends may attend a viewing Sunday evening, Nov. 7, 2004 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary and one hour prior to the services at the chapel.
After a luncheon, family and friends will travel to Browns Park where he will be laid to rest at 3:30 p.m. in the Allen family cemetery in Browns Park, Utah, under the direction of Thomson-Blackburn Vernal Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Uintah Basin Hospice, 26 West 200 North (78-15), Roosevelt, Utah 84066.
