Willard M. Hagman, age 85 of Aitkin completed his final mission on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Willard was born March 27, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Charles and Josephine (Peterson) Hagman. He grew up in the Aitkin area attending grade school at Kimberly and then high school in Aitkin graduating in 1941. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during WW II. He served in the 8th Air Force as a bombardier on a B-17. He flew 35 missions. He was discharged in 1945 and married Lois E. Nickander on May 26, 1945 at Kimberly. They Dairy farmed in Kimberly Township until 1979. Willard also drove school bus for 18 years. He has resided at the Aicota Health Care Center for the past 2 ½ years. Willard was a life member of the American Legion and VFW Posts in Aitkin; had served on the Kimberly Church Board, the Saron Cemetery Board, the Kimberly Township Board for 27 years, and the Aitkin School Board. Willard had also served on the Mille Lacs Electric Board for 35 years and on the UPA/GRE Board for many years. He was also a member of the Minnesota Chapter of the8th Air Force. He
enjoyed woodworking and playing cards. He is survived by his wife Lois Hagman of Aitkin; 1 son and daughter in law: Lance and Tracy Hagman of Hinckley, MN.; 3 daughters and sons in law: Terry and Howard Sylvester of Sauk Rapids, MN.; Barb and Will Byler of Apple Valley, MN.; Debbie and Hugh Janzen of Aitkin; 12 grandchildren: Alysa Swenson, Scott Sylvester, LaJean Larsen, Janean Dyke, Darren Byler, Steve Janzen, Chris Hagman, Sarah Emery, Adam Janzen, Charlie Hagman, Bethany Hagman and Alex Hagman; 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Josephine Hagman; 1 brother Harris Hagman; 2 great grandchildren: Nicholas Janzen and Damon Byler. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 10 AM from First Lutheran Church with Rev. Sandy Berg Holte officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Kimberly Township. Pallbearers will be Steve Janzen, Scott Sylvester, Chris Hagman, Darren Byler, Charlie Hagman, Alex Hagman, and Adam Janzen. Military honors will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 8 PM with a prayer service led by Rev. Lance Isaacson at 7:30 PM at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
