William Allison Cowen, Sr., was born about 1809 at Augusta, Maine (Massachusetts until March 4, 1820) where he trained as a glassblower. After moving to New Jersey he married Mary Weatherby in Cape May County about 1833. He moved his family to Baltimore, Maryland, about 1846 and remained there until his death on December 11, 1878. He was buried in Baltimore Cemetery.

On Wednesday, 11th of December, at 4 o'clock P. M., WILLIAM A. COWEN, in the 69th year of his age. His relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral, from his late residence, No. 207 Montgomery street, tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock.
