Eme was the fourth of five children born to Austrian-Hungarian immigrant parents, Michael and Marcella Csupor Takacs. He lived his early years in rural Illinois before moving with his family to Los Angeles, California.

During World War II Eme worked at Bethleham Steel Co. and later owned a Flying "A" gas station and garage in Gardena, California. He was a mechanic who also enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing.
