Daughter of Elisha L. and Maria Isabelle Applegate, Kate first married James T. Burns, by whom she had two known children: Byron Elisha and Ina C. Burns.

She next married Harry W. Kirchoff, with whom she had no known issue. Harry was enumerated as a boarder in her home at Portland, Oregon on the 1910 census, prior to their marriage. The 1917 marriage record of her daughter Ina to John Maloney at Vancouver, Washington listed her mother's surname as "Applegate now Kirchoff;" and her mother signed as a witness as "Kate Kirchoff,"

Last, she married George Laren Hamilton with whom she was residing at 928 Hensley Avenue in San Bruno, California at the time of her death. They are not known to have any issue.

Kate died of atherosclerosis and chronic nephritis at 250 McAllister Street in San Francisco.

Her funeral record notes she was survived by her husband George Hamilton; her children Byron E. Burns and Ina Burns McCarthy; and by siblings "Frank" Applegate and Omega (Cynthia) Costa, and was interred at this cemetery.
