GIANT POWDER BLAST HURLS DEADLY MISSILE
E R Elliott was fatally injured by a blast Tuesday afternoon at the French Gardens, where a large force of men are engaged in preparing the ground and planting apple trees.
Mr Elliott had drilled and loaded the hole himself to blow out the matted roots of a live oak stump, situated upon the side of a depression in the soil and against a huge rock. Between stump and rock the drilling was made and when ready to blast Mr Elliott surveyed the country and concluded that the debris would be projected down into the gully. After lighting the fuse he retired in an opposite direction. When the explosion occurred, a knotted root, weighing seven or eight pounds, struck him on the forehead, knocking him to the ground. The blow caved in his skull though Elliott did not lose consciousness, but immediately arose and supported by two coworkers walked quite a distance. He was carried to Sierra Hospital where his injuries were declared of a fatal nature. The skull had been crushed down into the nasal passages, exposing the brain to infection, and this set in Thursday evening, and the man's death was expected any moment.
Elliott is about 57 years of age and has resided in this county a number of years. Formerly he lived a Spring Gap above Hale's old saw mill on the ridge between the south fork and main Stanislaus rivers, where he perfected title to some valuable timber land. A few years ago he married Mrs Susie Miller, nee Elsbree, and since has resided in this city. Admired for his rugged honesty and faithful devotion to wife and children, his friends deeply regret the tragic accident.
