IDAHO SGT AIR CORPS WORLD WAR II.

Gene E Hickman was born in Preston, Idaho to Leonard Dwaine Hickman and Jeannie M McClurg. He is the sibling of Helen, Rex Dayle, Jean and Leonard Dwayne Jr. and the grandson of Survivor and Agnes Elizabeth Waddell Hickman.

Hickman was a gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress, assigned to the 19th Bombardment Group, 28th Bombardment Squadron.

On a bombing raid over Rabaul they took on a group of Japanese fighter planes. Hickman held off the Zeros for some time, until a cannon shell mortally wounded him. In addition to a Purple Heart, he received a Silver Star "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action".
