Mary was the wife of James' late brother William. James deserted Margaret and his three children in Lancaster, SC, and left with Mary to Athens, GA. after the war. His family in Lancaster never saw him again, and the two sons added the I to the name to separate themselves from their father.

According to old family records from the Moser family, James died in 1910 after being struck by lightning. Burial location was discovered through old funeral home records after years of researching.
