ELMER ADAMS
Elmer Adams, son of William D. and Mary Elizabeth (Allbright) Adams, was born at the old Adams home, May 22, 1880, departed this life January 18, 1905, age 24 years, 7 months and 26 days.
His sickness was of only a few days, duration, but only those who were at his bedside know how he suffered. All that could be done by loving hands was done to restore him to health and to his family and friends, but it seemed as if God loved him best. We cannot understand why such a happy home should be broken up by plucking out the bright light that cast the sunshine into the lives of all about him. But God in His wisdom knows best, and He saw fit to call him from this world of trouble to that one of peace and happiness. Yet it is hard for us to say, "It is well."
Death came to him only as death can come to those who lived the life that our dear brother lived. How truly it may be said he died as he had lived, and surely he lived the life we should all strive to live. Although he never expressed himself publicly of his faith in Christ, yet his life tells us he was striving to follow the teaching of our blessed Master. No one could say a word of harm about him. From his earliest school days his life has been marked with pourity, serenity and love for those about him. How we, as schoolmates and comrades, mourn to think that our pleasant relations with him are forever passed away, but we should hold his life before us as an example, and strive to meet him where we shall never part. In the death of Elmer the family lost a faithful, loving and obedient son, the lodge has lost a consistent, trustworthy brother, and the community a happy, cheerful and obliging friend. Short as was his life he had time to make a host of friends by his kindness, sympathy and faithfulness. Doubtless no death in our community will cause so much of genuine and lasting grief. Such a life as Elmer lived is not lived in vain.
The funeral took place at Friendly Grove church on Friday, January 20 in charge of the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Sisters of Rosedale and the Encampment of Rockville. After a very appropriate sermon by Rev. W. H. Vancleave, the body was taken to the cemetery nearby and laid in its last resting place to await the resurrection morn, where we shall meet our dear brother in that eternal home.
