Boonville - On Monday, October 7, 2019, George W. Capron, husband and father of two, passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 75.
George was born on August 13, 1944 in Boonville, NY to Robert and Iva Capron. Upon graduating from Boonville Central School with the class of 1962, he attended Alkins Radio School in Chicago, Il.
George was loved as far as the radio signal would reach and was known as “The Voice of the North Country”. His career as a radio personality began at WBRV in Boonville when he was 17 years old. He remained employed at the station until his death; providing the news, the weather and his own infectious wit for 55 years. In addition to his work at the radio station, George had a milk route and also delivered fuel oil in his younger years. He worked for many years at Adirondack Music in Boonville. Later in his life, George enjoyed working at the Boonville Herald where he was a proofreader and a contributing columnist.
George spent his life in Boonville and had a deep affection for the community and the outdoors that surrounds it. He was a life member of the Lost Trails Snowmobile Club, serving in leadership positions for several years. George loved riding the trails with his family and friends in the snow-packed woods. He was fascinated with weather (especially snowfall). George kept weather data for most of his adult life. His impressive memory helped fill his stories with characters from Boonville, weather history and his passion for music. For George, happiness included sitting in a cold boat on the wind-swept waters of Lake Placid with good friends, waiting to land a big one.
He had been a member of the Boonville Elks where he served as a trustee for many years. George will also be remembered for his color commentary during the Boonville Fair and Woodsmen’s Field Days parades.
He married Laurie Dunn Smith on November 18, 1967 in St. Joseph’s Church in Boonville. George is survived by his wife, Laurie; his two sons, Daniel Capron and Leisa Murphy of Newport, NY and Christopher Capron and his wife Rene' of Centennial, CO; his two grandchildren, Kennedy and Reagan and his sisters, Charlotte Willoughby of Boonville and Diane Daskiewich of Boonville. He is predeceased by his brother-in-law, Channing Willoughby and his sister-in-law Gail (Hoedy) Pruckno. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Visitation hours for the public will be Wednesday, October 9th from 2 to 6PM. A private service will be held on Thursday . All are invited to attend a luncheon and celebration of George’s life on Thursday, October 10th at 12:30 at the Boonville Elks Lodge, State Route 12.
