Rome - May 28 - Mrs. Margaret Klein Rothmund, widow of Peter Rothmond, died at 7 o'clock this evening at her beautiful new home, 811, North George Street. She had been in poor health the past three weeks and had been confined to the bed the past week. A general wearing out of the system was the cause of death. Deceased was born Nov. 16, 1826, in Ober-Seabach, Alsace, Canton Selts, France, and came to this country with her parents, three brothers and three sisters, when she was 20 years old and the family located on a farm in Verona, where she lived three years, then came to Rome when she married Peter Rothmund, who died 37 years ago. Mr. Rothmund at that time conducted a grocery and meat market on the bank of the Erie Canal, on the side of the present building of the A. Etheridge & Co., wholesale grocers. When she lived on the farm at Verona she and others used to walk to this city and return, a distance of 15 miles, to attend mass which was said by a priest at midnight in the old Mansion House, a priest coming here once in four or six weeks. She was one of the founders of the old St. Mary's Church, then located at the corner of North and James Streets, and also of the present fine edifice in West Liberty Street. For 41 years Mrs. Rothmund had lived in Rome and many were the interesting stories she could tell of the city years ago. Mrs. Rothmund had accumulated a great deal of property in this city. it was only about three years ago that she built the handsome home in North George street where she passes away, her home being one of the prettiest in that section of the city. Mrs. Rothmund was one of the best known residents. She was a very kind and charitable woman, and her many friends will learn of her death with sincere regret. Mrs. Rothmund was one of a family of 10 children, and the three following survive: Miss Carrie C., William E. and E. Otto Rothmund, all of Rome, and one brother, Martin Klein of Potter, Kas.
